We are passionate about the role that art plays in enhancing our environment and promoting overall wellness. And we love Canadian artists! Our mission is to help people reframe the way they think about decorating outdoor spaces. As part of that mission, we are working with Canadian artists to bring their important work into the sunlight!
Our program, Artists Outdoors, is dedicated to featuring the work of Canadian artists, reproduced on our weatherproof materials, and offering limited edition prints of their work to our customers. Over the summer we will be working on the development of a gallery dedicated to Artists Outdoors so that you can find and easily order these rare and limited edition prints.
We also look forward to featuring profiles and interviews with our artists so that you can get to know them a little better. Michael Peech, an award-winning Canadian artist generously donated a print of one of his paintings to us for the National Home Show, and we had the pleasure of asking him a few questions:
Recently we reconnected with artist, old friend, and creative inspiration, Michael Peech, who was kind enough to donate an image of one of his beautiful paintings, "Portrait of Anom" to our launch at the National Home Show. We had the opportunity to ask Michael a few questions about his life as an award-winning Canadian artist.
How long have you been a full-time artist? When and how did you discover your talent?
Ever since I can remember I wanted to be an artist. I had a great flair for drawing before I started school. I have been working as an artist professionally in some degree since 2000.
What's the most satisfying part of being an independent artist?
Freedom to be yourself.
Who are your mentors? Who are your favourite artists?
My first mentor would be my high school art teacher, Ian Black. I am most inspired by Tamara De Lempicka, Picasso & Leger.
How do you promote yourself and your work?
The majority of my promotion is by word of mouth, most often through studio tours and visits. Social media and gallery showings are also part of the mix.
What are some of the challenges you face as an artist in Canada?
As buyers of original art, Canada falls behind the US & Europe. The Canadian market is comparatively not that large, and I think Canadians are generally more reserved when buying art. I think so many Canadian painters have worked in and mastered landscapes. It's almost stereotypical that a Canadian artist should be painting plein air amongst the Rockies or in the Algonquins. For me, I draw great inspiration from the outdoors, but I transfer it inside.
